Congress has required that Social Security Numbers (SSN) be removed from Medicare cards to reduce exposure to identity theft. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is phasing out old Medicare Cards and SSN-based Health Insurance Claim Numbers (HICNs). Instead of HICNs, these cards will use a new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI).
